Contractors recently completed the first phase of environmental remediation at the Community Hub project. All asbestos has been removed from the two structures, which is the first step in readying the site for demolition and redevelopment.

Asbestos abatement and removal began on February 27, 2023 and took approximately three weeks to complete. The process included removing all trace amounts of asbestos and other hazardous materials. Multiple dumpsters, trucks and contractors were onsite throughout the removal process, which you may have seen if you drove through the intersection. A licensed asbestos removal company was hired to ensure the safe removal of all contaminated materials. Unfortunately, items needing to be removed included some exterior windows and doors. We ask that you pardon our dust and the temporary enclosures as we move forward with the project. The final product will look much better!

The work was funded by an EGLE grant received by the Huron County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. All environmental work, including asbestos removal and ground contamination removal, must be completed prior to HCCF starting construction and development on the Hub. This creates a safe environment for all who will use the Hub space in the future.

Next on the Hub site will be the demolition of the 101 N Port Crescent structure. Following demolition, in late summer to early fall, the ground will be dug up to remove trace amounts of petroleum remaining in the soil due to 101 W Huron Ave’s previous use as a gas station.

We are optimistic that 2023 will be a year of continued action on the Hub site. As progress continues, we will keep posting!
