Busting Myths About Estate Planning: Join Us for National Estate Planning Awareness Week!
October 21 - 27, 2024 marks National Estate Planning Awareness Week (NEPAW), and we at the Huron County Community Foundation (HCCF) are thrilled to join the celebration! This week provides a wonderful opportunity to highlight the importance of estate planning and dispel some of the most common myths surrounding it. Whether you’ve already started your estate plan or have never considered it, this week is for you!
Why National Estate Planning Awareness Week? NEPAW was established in 2008 to help Americans understand the importance of having an up-to-date estate plan. According to surveys, more than half of adults in the U.S. do not have any form of estate plan, which can leave their families and loved ones to make difficult decisions. By bringing estate planning into focus each year, NEPAW encourages everyone, regardless of age or wealth, to consider how they can plan for the future.
Estate planning is not only a powerful tool for personal security but also a way to make a positive difference in the community. At HCCF, we believe that with the right tools and guidance, everyone can create a legacy that supports the causes and organizations they care about. That’s why we’re excited to bring NEPAW to Huron County, focusing on the role estate planning can play in charitable giving and community impact.
Introducing Our Myth-Busting Series Throughout NEPAW, we’ll be publishing a series of blog posts that tackle some of the most pervasive myths about estate planning. Each post will address a different misconception, helping our community members better understand estate planning’s importance and how it can benefit not just their families, but also Huron County as a whole. Estate planning myths can sometimes discourage people from taking action, so we’re here to debunk them with friendly, accessible information.
Our series will cover the following topics:
"Estate Planning is Only for the Wealthy" – We’ll explore how estate planning is beneficial for everyone, no matter the size of their estate.
"I’m Too Young to Worry About Estate Planning" – Estate planning isn’t just for the elderly; it’s for anyone who wants to protect their loved ones and make sure their wishes are honored.
"Only Large Gifts Make an Impact" – Learn how even small gifts can create a lasting legacy in Huron County when combined with others through HCCF’s permanent endowment funds.
"Estate Planning is Only About Money" – Estate planning also reflects personal values and legacy, allowing people to support causes they care about.
Celebrating NEPAW with New Resources for Professional Advisors This year, we’re especially excited to share our new Professional Advisors webpage at www.hccfadvisors.org. This page is dedicated to the local financial advisors, attorneys, and tax professionals who help community members navigate the complexities of estate planning. Through this resource, we hope to make charitable giving simpler for donors by partnering with their trusted advisors and providing easy access to the information they need to make meaningful gifts to Huron County causes.
By working closely with these professionals, we can ensure that each gift—whether large or small—reflects the donor’s unique vision for their legacy. Our professional advisor network is a critical component of our mission, and we’re committed to supporting them in every way we can. Together, we can help residents of Huron County incorporate charitable giving into their estate plans, maximizing the positive impact on our community.
Why Are We Doing This? At HCCF, we believe that estate planning is not just for the wealthy or the elderly. It’s for anyone who wants to provide for their loved ones, support the causes they care about, and build a lasting legacy. We’re celebrating NEPAW to raise awareness, dispel myths, and encourage our community members to think about their own futures and how they can make a difference right here in Huron County.
Over the coming days, join us as we take a closer look at estate planning myths and explore how a little planning today can make a big difference tomorrow.
