Harold and Vera Cubitt Family Fund Announces Grants

The Huron County Community Foundation is proud to announce the first-ever grant awards from the Harold and Vera Cubitt Family Fund, honoring the legacy of Harold and Vera Cubitt and their lifelong commitment to education and community.

Family Legacy

Harold Leslie Cubitt was born in 1911 on the family farm near Snover, and Vera Mildred Cubitt was born in 1914 in Custer Township near Sandusky. They were married on June 3, 1933, and shared over 71 years together until their passing in 2006 and 2005, respectively. Both Harold and Vera graduated from Sandusky High School, and Harold earned a teaching certificate from Central Michigan College, where he performed as a violinist and participated in statewide music festivals. Harold taught K–8 for several years before working as a postal clerk, Civil Service examiner, and later a real estate broker. He and Vera were deeply involved in their church, local 4-H programs, and community organizations such as the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge.

Harold and Vera’s commitment to education extended to their family. All seven of their children attended college or post–high school programs, with many receiving scholarships and community support.

Fund Purpose

Established by Harold and Vera’s grandchildren, the Cubitt Family Fund honors the family’s legacy by supporting well-rounded educational and cultural experiences for Bad Axe students. The fund provides grants to educators, extracurricular programs, and initiatives that enhance the academic environment through classroom innovations, cultural experiences, including international exchanges, or extracurricular opportunities.
