Donor Advised Funds

Creating a Donor Advised Fund enables you to be actively engaged in the grantmaking process, recommending grants to nonprofit organizations annually.

By creating a donor advised fund at your community foundation, you not only provide support to worthy causes but also gain access to planned giving and investment management services. A donor advised fund allows you to play an active role in community philanthropy while creating a legacy through a permanent endowment. It operates similarly to a private foundation but with streamlined administration and oversight, sparing you from the administrative burdens.

How it Works

Here are the steps involved in establishing a Donor Advised Fund:

  1. Conversation: The first step in determining if a donor advised fund is the right fit for your philanthropic goals is to have a conversation with the HCCF staff

  2. Fund Establishment: We create a new fund at the foundation with the name that you have chosen

  3. Contribution: Make a gift to start the donor advised fund - cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets. This is a great time to start thinking about estate gift planning to continue

  4. Tax Benefits: Enjoy tax advantages in the year of your donation.

  5. Grant Distribution: Recommend grants to the foundation board for final approval — working with our staff to support the causes and organizations you care about most, or consult our team on current community needs

  6. Administrative Support: We handle all the administrative tasks and compliance and then issue grants to the selected organizations in the name of the fund you establish, or anonymously, after approval

  7. Impact Updates: Stay informed with regular updates on the impact of grants made from the fund. These updates often include photos from the organization

  8. Annual Fund Statement: Each year, within the first three months of the year, you receive a statement of the fund’s investment performance and grantmaking from the prior year

Benefits

Donor Advised Funds are convenient, flexible tools for individuals, families, businesses, or groups that want to be personally involved in suggesting grant awards made possible by their gifts. If you have a range of community interests, you may find that a donor advised fund is an ideal vehicle for fulfilling your charitable wishes. Donor Advised Funds offer similar benefits as private and family foundations without the administrative and cost burden. You can add to the fund you establish at any time, receiving tax benefits with each new gift. Every year, you can engage in the charitable giving process by recommending grants.
